Jeremy and Carolina are architects with extensive international experience, now based in Lisbon. Their work combines creativity, precision, and respect for the environment they shape.
Jeremy, an American architect and designer, was a lead designer at Heatherwick Studio in London, contributing to a large multi-use development in Shanghai and designing a monumental addition to Waddesdon Manor. He also collaborated with Pritzker Prize winner Jean Nouvel in Paris and New York on projects including the MOMA Tower in New York and SunCal Tower in Los Angeles. Jeremy graduated with honors from the Southern California Institute of Architecture (SCI-Arc).
Carolina, a Portuguese architect, started at Ateliers Jean Nouvel in Paris and New York and later joined Barber & Osgerby in London, working in their interior design division, Universal Design Studio. She received the Inov-Art Grant from the Portuguese Ministry of Culture, which brought her to Los Angeles to work on innovative prefabricated housing systems. She studied in Lisbon and Paris, recently completed a postgraduate program in Neuroarchitecture in Barcelona, and will start Architecture for Common Spaces at YACademy University in Bologna. As creative director of Humanize Space, Carolina integrates research-based design to create sustainable, regenerative communities.
Atelier Backlar leverages Jeremy and Carolina’s expertise in large international projects, combining rigor and efficiency with local sensitivity and close client collaboration to deliver modern, meaningful, and sustainable design solutions.

The Blue house is the re-construction of an abandoned ruin, located on ‘Old Harbour Road’ of Capelas – the historic whaling street on the North side of Sao Miguel Island. Balancing between old and contemporary, the design takes advantage of the existing elements, while creating contrast and balance. The primary construction elements of all the walls, floors, roofs and embedded structure were pre-fabricated and assembled on-site in 10 days. The chosen panel system provided very accurate assembly, high thermal efficiency and a carbon neutral result. The blue facade material is up-cycled ocean plastic that has been collected and re-cast into cladding material for this project.
